Every girl wants something different I guess... but smart girls will want a guy who feels the same way they do about having children, who will discipline them the same way or be willing to work that out between them lovingly, and who will be a partner to her in every way if they do choose to become parents together.
She'll want someone who will be willing to communicate during good times and bad, stick it out when it's not great, be able to admit when he's wrong and be gentle about it when she's the one who's wrong.
She's looking for a man to be honest with her about everything, someone who will put effort into the relationship and never take her for granted, not from the honeymoon til one of them dies. Best is a man who isn't afraid of hard work, asking for directions, listening to his wife, or changing a diaper. A guy who wants to learn everything he doesn't already know and willing to admit the difference between the two.
Compatibility with this guy, while important, isn't everything because differences can be interesting and this way you each expand a bit as you grow together. He should have a streak of adventure, but still be able to give her the security of knowing that she is now, and always will be, his only one.
If the guy is able to put her first, she'll do the same for him, and if the guy has his priorities straight in life, she'll appreciate him all the more.
Marriage takes effort. Any guy who wants to get married has to know that when you say "I do" it's not time to relax. It's time to kick it up a notch... slowly building and tending the relationship so that by the time you're old together, neither of you could possibly say you should have chosen differently. Honest answer.

Most important is to first look for someone you could actually get along with for the rest of your life. Attraction is important, but looks fade, and personality is forever. You want someone who can make you smile, and someone who you can be yourself with. Marriage is a partnership, life doesn't end, it begins with two people working together towards common goals.

Aloha - I think that most women all want the same thing - what they are sold when they are dating. Romance, thoughfullness, impromtu, being taken out - not having to do the where do you wanna go, I dunno where do you wanna go - hand holding, passionate kisses, flowers sometimes, just all around love and thoughfullness of each other. Relationships are 100% from each person - never keeping score, knowing when to give in.

an assurance of commitment, love, loyalty, happiness, and good times. a good way to assure her of this is to sincerely tell her and show her over a long period of time.
