To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C.

First of all, they did not spend anywhere near $12billion! The cost was less than $100, 000. The space pen wrote on surfaces and places where a pencil would not work, read what you just wrote. The Russians bought our space pens at a flea market in San Diego.
