It could, in fact, be a sign of illness; it is not uncommon for people with diabetes to crave ice cubes. it could also be a compulsion, or a habit going out of control. you should discuss this with your physician.

Eating ice can be a good way to curb cravings for other food that isn't good for you. That said, you can break or chip your teeth chomping on ice.
Also, there is a form of Diabetes where the kidneys get rid of too much water due to damage of the pituitary gland (saw that on TV the other night).

Be careful that the ice doesn't start to cause nerve damage in your teeth. If you start getting toothaches, you should stop before you kill the tooth.
In addition, I had always heard that chewing ice was a subconscious venting of sexual repression.

I doubt it's harmful and would not be considered a disorder (like pica) unless you're eating other substances as well, non-food things like matches, dirt, soap, hair, etc
Just be careful not to crack a tooth! Some folks eat ice as a nervous habit...
