People say atheists have to disprove god, and a lack of proof is not enough. Any argument like that, could prove anything. Even the tooth fairy. "Something does exist, till it is disprove." If that was the case, I could come up with anything and it would be fact till disprove. I can say there is a cow with no head in a different dimension (his eyes/mouth are on his leg), who steals socks from the dryer. You can not disprove that. He hides the dimension, etc. I saw this argument pop up, and wanted to see if anyone else felt this way.

No, I do not believe in the cow thing, it is an example. I know someone would ask that.

the idea that one can completely disprove that which, even by those that believe in it, can never be understood and can not be seen is ridiculous. one can, however, prove that the bible is full of errors and that the christian belief system simply makes no sense.

What these religionists don't realize that the burden of proof is entirely on them. They are making the positive assertion that there is a god. It is impossible to prove there isn't a god because proving a negative assertion is impossible. If I said the third planet in the Alpha Proxima star system was covered with a three foot layer of French brie and told you to prove it wasn't, you would not be able to even though the assertion is ridiculous.

Personally, In as much as I was not around to see how everything came into being (and neither were you),I say, "I don't know ..... YET!" To assume that some god, my less than intellectual ancestors made up, instantaneously farted the universe into being, is absurd

You are correct, of course.

In asking an atheist for proof of god's nonexistence, the believer only reveals his or her own ignorance.

Now, there still may really be a god, and there may even be a good argument that a god really exists. But "you can't prove he doesn't exist" is not that good argument. It's just an ignorant response.

Well it all depends on people's faith. Those who have little faith need scientific proof. The idea of lack of proof is interesting, but most Christians believe there is proof (if not in a scientific way) that God does exist. The proof for many Christians is in Jesus, miracles, visions and any other form of religious experience.

You cant disprove God. Logically you can never prove something does not exist.
You can only prove what does exist. So if there are clues about the existence of God, it becomes more and more unlikely He does not exist. Because the opposite never can be proven.
(Like you can never prove pink elephants dont exist)

we are curious creatures and we rely on our senses to distinguish between what is and what's not. Soooo if we cannot see, smell, touch, taste or hear God, then why believe in him? Im not saying I dont, just stating one of the reasons WHY there is a need to disprove his existence.

Well said.
Lack of evidence is proof enough of non-existence.
And there is NO evidence to support the existence of god or any other magic sky-pixie. Not a shred.

There is no compelling reason to try to prove that something does not exist, when there is absolutely no credible evidence to support the idea that it exists in the first place.
