The fight is at welterweight, a great many experts considered Robinson a much better welterweight than middleweight and I agree. We all know how great Leonard was as a welter.

Before we go to the fight, they were in the same weight class. Robinson was great as welter wt. and middle wt.; I rank him #1 in both divisions.

Leonard - TF 40 - KO's 23 - great amateur/Olympic champion - wins over Benitez, Hearns, Duran and Hagler -KO'ed as old fighter (like Ali) by Camacho.

Robinson - TF 200 - KO's 108 - great amateur (that is where got his name and nickname) - also unbeaten as an amateur - wins over Zivic, Lamotta, Armstrong, Fullmer, Basilio, Olson, Kid Gavilan and another 5 to 10 more good fighters - KO'ed (heat exhaustion) by Joey Maxim,

Both had movie star "good looks" .The hype leading up to this bout would be off the scale. Even though I always have thought that Leonard could not be KO'ed, Robinson could win by TKO in 14/15 or Robinson by unanimous decision.

This is propbably the best question i've ever had the privelage of answering!
The answer is, the original "Sugar", Ray Robinson.
While Ray Leonard was a great skilled fighter, Ray Robinson was the godfather of the modern day fighter. His style was the basis for the style of most fighters since him. Ali was baiscally a clone of him in a bigger body. But the most beautiful thing about Robinson was he had power like a heavyweight while fighting as a welterweight and middleweight. He had wars with Jake Lamotta, winning 5 out of 6, and beat the likes of Carmen Basillio also. He fought in a time when boxers were really gladiators and 9 out of 10 times he was the victor.
Ray Leanord (I dont like to call him Sugar) was a great fighter for his time and probably for most times, but he was not even close to Robinson. His speed was comparable but his power was nowhere near the devestation that was Robinson. While Leonard did beat the best of his time, and i cant take that away, he would be a slightly better than average fighter during the Robinson era.
In the actual fight, I believe that Leonard would win the first round with his in and out style. Robinson would figure him out and cut off the ring by the second or third round. Then Leonard would have to reap the whirlwind. Robinson was one of the greatest finishers of all time and he would hurt Leonard by the 5th and finish him by the 7th. Robinson by 7th rd KO

There is no doubt for this question, Sugar Ray Robinson, would have beaten Ray Leonard. Sugar Ray was the best pound for pound fighter of all time, a great athlete.Robinson easily over Leonard in a KO in round 6.

I never saw Ray Robinson fight but everyone who did said he was the best pound for pound fighter who ever lived. Leonard was terrific in his day but I would say Robinson by late TKO (rds 12 or 13, assuming it was a 15 rd fight).

Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all-time, would win. He was tougher and a much better all-around fighter than Ray Leonard.

A very good and exciting matchup! Neither man would have an edge in handspeed though Robinson has a reach advantage and a slight advantage in punching power. I pick Robinson on points. Great question!
