well first of all they are called many names. they are a rare breed and commonly called Louisiana Hog dogs, Catahoula Leopard dogs, Catahoula Curs...etc.

and I HAVE ONE and MJ is completely WRONG about them. they are WONDERFUL dogs. and make great family pets.
However, a LAZY owner that doesn't want to put any effort into an animal WOULD call them difficult and "not a good pet." so its probably good that MJ doesn't have a Catahoula

ive had my Catahoula for 4 1/2 yrs. he is almost 6yrs old. that dog was an outside dog when we adopted him, (he was a foster dog and his story is on my 360 page), he marked ONCE in my house, and was taken outside and shown where to go. NEVER has he peed in my house again.
that dog will protect me with his LIFE, and HAS twice! a huge dog escape from its tie out in someones yard and rushed me. he put himself between me and that dog, and wrestled him to the ground. the other dog was okay, but shaken and he whimpered and left.
the other time he saved my life was when my husband was gone overseas (he's military), and a man was sneaking around my yard outside my bedroom window. Patch (that's his name), woke up and started a very quiet low growl, the hair on his back stood up and he rushed to the back door. he wanted out...and as i peeked out the french doors to see what upset him..i saw a dark figure creeping around the corner towards me. it scared me, and i went to get a weapon. i stepped out on the back porch and was ready to attack this guy when Patch spun from around me and let out a growl ive never heard before in my life...and dove at the man. he bit the guys index finger OFF his right hand and tore his leg open. i ran inside and called 911. he managed to jump back over my fence and escape but Patch (sorry this is nasty), puked up his finger and the police took it. YUCK! anyways...later they found the guy. he was a serial sex offender that had JUST been parolled!!!!
i can't imagine what would have happened if Patch wasn't here.
they are VERY protective dogs, and DO need strong handling and a very dominant pack leader (that would be you.) they need vigorous exercise!!! LONG LONG LONG walks...or an hour run.
they can be standoffish with strangers..including strange children. but my Patch is VERY freindly with people that don't hurt me...and that is because he was well socialized as a young adult dog. socializing this breed is VERY important. HAVE HIM/HER NEUTERED/SPAYED!! this calms him/her down, a lot.

and unless you are talking to someone that has had a Catahoula or many Catahoula's in their life...don't pay attention to their unfounded opinion about a dog they obivously never had the chance to enjoy as a member of their family!!
and just so you know...reasearching this breed WAS a good idea on your part. it helps you to know what they MAY turn out like. but that is not always the case. every dog..(much like people) has a different temperment, and personality.

good luck with your new baby!!!!

here is a pic of mine!

I think if you go to www.dogbreedinfo.com, click on the "L", and scroll to Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog, you will also see breeder information there. Maybe you can find one who would be ready to email with you and discuss your concerns. There are many great people using this internet and I'm sure you will find someone.

I know a breeder. They are a very 'hard' breed and IMO do not make the best of pets. If you get one, get it a job and stay in charge. If you are not pack leader he most certainly will be.
