You will find your answer in Genesis ch.16. Ishmael was the illegitimate son of Abraham. In ch.17 you will find Isaac, who is Abraham"s legitimate son, and the son that God made His covenant with. This is the contention that the children of Ishmael(the Arabs) have with the children of Isaac(the Jews). But don't just take my word for it. Read it for yourself.

Sarah was barren. She thought she was past the age of child bearing. She sent Abraham to her handmaid, an Egyptian, and she bore Abraham a son, which she name Ismael.
An Angel of the Lord came later, some believe it was God himself, and told Sarah she would bear Abraham a son, and Sarah laughed. The Lord asked her why she laughed, and Sarah denied she had, but the Lord told her she had laughed because she was ninety years old at the time. But she did get with child, and bore Abraham a son, who was named Issac. That is the cause of the trouble over there today. Ismael was hot tempered and war-like and Isaac wasn't. The followers of Ismael are the ones makng trouble over there now. I got a little ahead of my story. After Issac was born, Sarah had Abraham drive Ismael and his mother out.

They are not twins. Ishmael was born to Abraham first thru Hagaar and then Isaac through Sarah. When Isaac was born, Abraham sent Hagaar and Ishmael away from him. The Bible passage concerning them are Genesis chapters 20 and 21.

They were not twins. Isaac was Abraham's son with is wife Sarah. Ismael was the son born to Sarah's hand maiden. He was older. Sarah became very jealous of her and she fled with her son.

Abrahams two sons issac and ismael were not twins. when sarah was thought to be inferitle abrahan had an illegtimate child ismael with their servernt hagar. he was the first born. then miraculously sarah was able to bare children and they have their child issac. so the debate is stemmed from the fact that ismael was born first but issac was the legitimate child of the marriage.

Sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael. Not twins..
The inheritance was based upon Abrahams obedience to God. ... wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac...
Ishmael married an Egyptian and fathered 12 sons and a daughter. He was the half brother of Isaac and was Esau 's father-in-law
Interested in reading the story of Abraham.. Isaac and Ishmeal..
there's so much more to this.. it's all in your bible.

According to the Bible, Ishmael was born first, by a handmaiden, Hagar, when Abraham's wife, Sara was thought to be barren. However, Sara later gave birth to Isaac when Ishmael was probably a teen. Sara grew jealous of Abraham's relationship with Hagar and especially Ishmael and asked to have them sent away. Abraham, knowing Sara would torment Hagar and Ishmael until she got her way, consulted God for an answer to his predicament. God told Abraham that if he sent Hagar and Ishmael into the desert that God would take care of them and make Ishmael a great nation. This was considered Abraham's first test. His second was when God challenged him to sacrifice his second son, Isaac (to see if Abraham would had trusted God instead of sending Hagar and Ishmael away just to make life easier for himself.)

Sarah hadn't conceived so she told Abraham to make her servant, Hagar, pregnant so she could get a child that way. Common back then, but not God's plan.
Hagar had Ishmael.
THEN, wouldn't you know it, Sarah did become pregnant. She then had Issac. Well, it was downhill from there for the Abraham family and we are all still living with those consequences.

Ishmael was born first and his mother was a slave woman of Sarah, but God never recognised Ishmael and always considered Isaac Abraham's only son.
Gen 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
