What do you think of this new law ?HB 1023 requires people who apply for non-emergency government benefits to sign an affidavit attesting to their legal immigration status. They also must show one of four IDs: a Colorado driver's license, a Colorado ID, a merchant-mariner card or a Native American tribal document. Then an agency worker must check the applicant's immigration status on an online system known as SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements). How will this affect the "Illegal population" in that state?

Good for Colorado. It's bound to have a great affect, since any Southwestern state is home to many illegal immigrants; right now the states have to take enforcement into their own hands, and that's bound to have a domino effect for the better, assuming the illegals move to the sourrounding states, as someone has already pointed out.

To buy a gun anywhere in the USA, you have to sign a form stating you are legally allowed to own a gun. Sound like the same thing for government benefits. Except the constitution guaranties the right to keep and bear arms. There is no such protection of government benefits.

Great but this should just be the beginning not the end. Why not require proof for all govt benefits? If they are here legally they should have their passports with visas with them at all times like the law requires so any emergency assistance could be taken care of right on the spot.
Good one JD

Great idea!! Since our Federal government does sweet F.A. about immigration, for their own nefarious reasons, the individual States will have to take the initiative ... hopefully all States will follow Colorado's example!!!! And it's up to the citizens to keep the pressure up!! Don't take the eye off the ball ...

Bravo! Bravo! This is heartwarming to hear! And to Stealth who said the illegal immigrants will just move to the neighboring states? Great, let them move to those states - and when those states find themselves being completely inundated with illegal immigrants and find their hospitals, schools and social services being overwhelmed and their neighborhoods and property values going down, down, down, those states will find it attractive to copy Colorado. Then, the illegals will again move to the next nearby states, and so on, and so on, until they find that they are no longer welcome ANYWHERE in the USA - and they will then return themselves back over the border to their own home countries, culminating in self-deportation at no cost to the great citizens of the USA! Problem solved!

More programs like this need to be in place to get this immigration problem under control and not have everything so easily accessible for the people it was not intended for.As long as America does Mexico's dirty work, Mexico will keep sending it

Sounds reasonable to me. Colorado is basically demanding that an immigrant be legal and, if not, they won't qualify for benefits. That's how it should be in the first place!

Immigrants built your country if you are not First Nations.

The choices for i.d. seem out of this world. How could you dream those up?

Pity the non-native, non-driving, non-merchant-mariner, the homeless, the mugged, victims of fraud and, come to think of it, everyone else in a repressed society.

Since the federal government is doing little to nothing to stop this invasion, states, cities, and counties are beginning to take action. This invasion is going to stop because the people want it to, and those in office need to think twice about re election.
