Why are some people such whiners?
And note, I did say some, not all.
Cops are not subject to all of the same laws that the average citzen is. Especially with traffic related laws. Further, exemptions do not specify that lights and sirens need to be active.
All exemptions occur however when an officer is in the lawful execution of his or her duty. When transporting a prisoner for instance, it is unsafe for a cop to wear his or her seatbelt.
As for signalling, it is not a requirement everytime a movement is made. Signals are only required, in the case of most state and provincial traffic laws, when the movement of the vehicle will affect other traffic using the roadway.
If there are no cars around me and I am changing lanes, there is no need, or requirement to signal. Same goes for regular citizens. I have never given anyone a ticket for failing to signal...
And as for "citizens arrest", some people watch way too much TV. As cops, we can't arrest someone for not wearing a seatbelt, or for failing to signal, so where do people get the idea that there is a citizens arrest for the same? It's clear that they have no clue what the powers of arrest are for a civilian. And they do exist, and are clearly spelled out in law.
We cops are human, the same as all of you. We just wear different clothes to work and have different responsibilities. I don't give tickets to people for seatbelt violations, as I too don't wear it all the time, especially in my private vehicle. We do all of the things everyone else does. We speed, we use cell phones while driving, we get caught late in lights changing and we are subject to being penalized just like everyone else.
HOWEVER, the difference is, we all do the same work, and face the same risks. We have a "Brotherhood" and a common bond and look out for one another.
If I worked at a stadium and showed up to a game, would a fellow employee let me in without paying? Quite possibly. Is this fair when all the other citizens are paying to see the game? Sure, why not?
If I work at a large retail store and get a discount, is it fair to charge the customers full price? Sure is.
If I work for a travel agency, do I get free trips while others pay loads for theirs? Absolutely.
Where do you work? Are there any benefits that non employees don't get?
Membership has it's prviledges.
We take care of each other. We get breaks within reason. But it's not a free ride. We still have to pay the piper for serious offences. You'll be hard pressed to find a department where an officer hasn't been arrested for serious offences like domestics, drunk driving, theft or something else. These things are dealt with the same as everyone else.
And on a side note, "colostomybag4fun1" obviously has a very general and uninformed view of police. I'm sure everyone appreciates his wonderful and informative answer to this question. Clearly, this is someone who lives life on the wrong side, cause they can't cut it in a lawful world as a decent member of society. Yet when the poop hits the fan, who do you think he'll call? Then who's the hypocrite?

In my state, law enforcement, ambulance, firemen and mail carriers are exempt. So it depends on department policy. I have worked for departments that required it, while another did not. I personally don't like wearing one with my duty gear on. It was easy for the belt to get tangled in my holster, it also made for a less efficient exit from the vehicle.
Turn signals. I have actually heard both ways - reasons for and against... reasons not to - it telegraphs your intentions to a suspect. I almost always used mine because it was such an habit.

No one is above the law. In some cases, they don't use the seat belt in order to move fast and quick, especially in a quick response situation where mobility is of paramount importance. Otherwise, their lives could be in the line of fire.

why don't you try a citizens arrest... see where that gets you. do as they say not as they do. laws apply to everyone. if a cop doesn't use a blinker, doesn't wear a seat-belt or runs a red-light (which i have seen frequently) then, that officer is BREAKING THE LAW. but hey, what can you do?

They do have to use directionals, and are NOT required to wear a seat belt IN THEIR CRUISER, it is exempted in most state laws as it is an emergency vehicle, same goes for fire trucks and ambulances

I use both, the officers you see should. I write tickets for both so not using them would be very hipocritical. About the only time you'll see me w/o using my signals is when I'm running lights& sirens.
