On Monday I'm going to get my first perm and I would like some tips on how to manage it. I've had straight hair all my life and I'm sick of it, I just don't know anything about the upkeep and what not to do. Tips appreciated.

Hi.. I was sick of my straight hair and had a perm two years ago. I made a bad mistake, I lost a lot of hair, and that is because the chemicals dry out and weaken your hair. It took me about another year after the perm had grown out to get my hair back to its original state, but it's a lot thinner now. My perm took a year and a half to go and by that time I was sick of it.

You have to be prepared to buy intense conditioners as your hair will become really dry. After your perm don't wash your hair for about three days and that is so that the chemicals 'lock' in the curl. After that, use a shampoo for dry/permed/curly hair, apply John Frieda's frizz ease, then mousse, and thats it. A wide toothed comb helps.

I have been through it and would never advice anyone to get a perm. You could buy curling tongs, and style your hair. The thing with a perm is sometimes you get so sick of it, but you can't do anything about it until it grows out. Even though you can straighten it, you just make it more drier and brittle.

I never used to buy hair products, but during my perm phase I wasted a lot of money on conditioners, mousses, anti-frizz products, etc - so if you are prepared for all that then by all means go ahead.

Good luck.
