The "square" on the bumper is a towing eyelet cover. In the event that your vehicle breaks down, the towers can remove the cover and use the hook (underneath the cover). The cover is there for aesthetic reasons and also to protect the hook.

"Mr. Fixit" is incorrect, as is "tepidorator" and "Phatom". The Volvo (and pretty much every other auto manufacturers park assist) park assist system has circular sensors (plural, there are multiply sensors), not square. The square is a towing eyelet that is located on the rear right portion of your rear bumper and there is also one located on the front left portion of your front bumper. It is located underneath your left headlight (if you are standing IN FRONT of your car) and is in the trim piece that is on the bumper.

OH That little square,
I am taking a guess here but after reviewing options on the S40 I see a backing assist option. If you have a distance display or lights that say your going to hit something this is the location of the sensor doing the job. it is located on the right rear of the rear bumper....Correct!?

Eric is right. It's a tow hook cover. Some Volvo's have it on the front bumper, others have it on the Back bumper. Some have both. Some are black textured, some are the color of the car.

Go with Mr fixit on this one. Eric and Cole, while well intentioned, are incorrect.
