Yes Pete...yes they are. Seriously What kind of person would seriously believe that a cold and starving 14 year old boy in New York could find God's holy words between two gold tablets, start up a new religion, and move all of his followers to Utah.

ALL Fundamentalist religions are cults. The Christian religion has many cults arise from this or that emphasis and mis-enterpretation of the bible. IT is usually very dogmatic in theme, gives the followers very few decisions to make as to life style. You see this here with tremendous regularity. It isn't just Mormans, it is all the little church splinters. Muslims splinter with great regularity too, and each is no more than a cult. Good luck

I am a member of the Mormon church (officially called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). I do not find the term "cult" offensive, as some may, although many people apply the term to us in a negative way.

A cult may be defined as:
1. Adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices
2. A system of religious beliefs and rituals
3. In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs and goals which may be contradictory to those held by the majority of society
4. A religious group that follows a particular theological system

Some Christians like to exclude other Christian faiths (such as Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Scientists, and so forth) from the whole of Christianity by labeling them as cults. They fail to recognize, however, that by definition Jesus Christ himself started a cult, because his teachings did not fit in with mainstream Judaism. He may have been considered a cult leader!

By the way, many people who regularly refer to the Mormons as a cult also have distorted views on what we actually believe.

Yes. They follow a man who stumbled out of a bar drunk into a forrest and "had a visit". They believe that they can become Gods and say that they follow the Bible as well as their own added words (God's words in the Bible say that you shall have no God before you accept the Lord God).
Their are many more examples of how they have changed the Words of the Bible to read like they want.
They are a cult and will stand before God one day answering for why they took away and added to the Word of God.
Now saying all that, many good people are sucked in by it. Being good doesn't get you into heaven (Not of works, lest any man should boast). Being a "family oriented church" is the way they draw people in.

Having grown up Mormon, i would have to answer no. It is a very family oriented religion and a wonderful belief. I now have the added advantage of age and wisdom to realize that all organized religions have value and worth, just as all organized religions have some hypocrisy and false truths. And to love2havefun, Mormons are Christians!

Mormons are a sort of Christian. We have faith that Christ is our savior and redeemer, that he's the only ability wherein we are able to acquire salvation, and that he's the son of God. in spite of the shown fact that, we even have faith that God keeps to talk to guy by using prophets, even after Christ. i think of many different Christian church homes have a issue with that. yet Peter grew to become right into a prophet, and all the favorite prophets do the comparable as he did: testify of Christ and in simple terms lead the church. So i don't see why maximum of have a issue with that. We have faith God has spoken to many and keeps to talk at present, that he's not silent and that he does not cut back his observe to easily the bible. We cherish and love the bible, yet as one form of scripture and not because of the fact the only observe of God. on the subject of if we are a cult. We easily are not from now on than the different Christian church. So, reckoning on your definition of cult the two all Christianity or none is. From what i've got considered, that seems to be a observe human beings use to attempt to scare others removed from specific church homes. There quite isn't lots base for it. i desire I helped slightly to respond to a number of your questions. in case you have from now on, be at liberty to digital mail me. besides, God bless!

I think it depends on the sect of Mormonism. Fundamentalist (as in, not members of the Church of Latter Day Saints) Mormons are definitely a cult. They are extremely controlling of the private lives of their brethren, and they are extremely isolated from the rest of society.

The Church of Latter Day Saints is much less controlling, etc., but it's still too restrictive for my tastes.
