The female dog will constrict the cervix around the bulbus glands of the male. This results in a tie.The why is it may help with conception but it also thought that this way the male and female can be on guard faced outward.

Because when a male dog is having sex he swells up, and until he umm, errr, gets off he can not come back out of the female until the swelling goes down. If you try to pull them apart you can hurt/kill the female.

The male penis swells & the dogs remain "tied" together until the male returns to usual size. It is natures way of getting a successful insemination

Bulbus Glandis. This swelling of the penis is located toward the rear end of the os penis. As soon as the male dog inserts his penis into the *****'s vagina and begins to thrust, the bulbus glandis enlarges to a firm spherical shape, resulting in the so-called "coital tie." This tie prevents the male dog and the ***** from separating immediately after ejaculation and may last from 5 to 60 minutes.

The reason dogs get stuck together while mating is because during the female climax, the vaginal canal will contract and trap the male organ. Then the male dog will simply try to get away, and that is why they turn back to back.

Some Virgin dogs have this problem. The male goes in soft and then turns the opposite direction. Then it gets bigger. It causes the dogs to stick together before they are done. Don't try and separate them.

The muscles of the female contract to hold the dog in there longer, hence tying them together to increase the chances of more offspring.
