I just don't like singing. I can't do it very well, and I've never particularly enjoyed it in church. Sometimes I find the use of music in a service a bit cheezy as it's sometimes used to invoke a bit of emotional sensationalism, Any suggestions where I can go to hear about God without the melody.

Try a Quaker fellowship (traditional Friends, not Evangelical). They have silent services in which they sit in "expectant waiting" for the Spirit of God to move them. Then they do whatever feels right at the moment. Yeah, they may sing, but if the Spirit doesn't move you to, you don't have to.

I've had the same problem. I actually stopped going to church because of the first 20 minutes or so of singing. I enjoy everything before the singing and after the singing....but can't stand the singing. A friend had this problem as well, so he is now 15 minutes late every Sunday. He catches a couple minutes of song, then settles in for the sermon. I've just learned to deal with it, as I enjoy mingling with the people before the service.

As far as hearing sermons without song....try finding a Christian Radio station in your area. Mine is WORD FM in Pittsburgh. On my way to work in the morning I listen to a Pastor from Illinois for 30 minutes (and his whole sermon is generally about 20 minutes long...in parts throughout the week), and on my way home I catch one of three other National Ministries just sermonizing. Listener beware though....Christian Radio stations play lots of songs too....just find the time of the sermons.

Sunday morning television offers sermons-only type shows as well. Jerry Falwell and a few others have 60 minutes sermons (with lots of advertising though).

Many Catholic masses (aside from the primary services on Sunday), some Episcopal services have no music or singing. The Church of Christ (NOT the UNITED Church of Christ) use no musical instruments, but they may have singing.

Honestly, most people feel a bit shy about singing, and I encourage you to find a congregation that allows you to feel comfortable.

yes it sometimes is used to encourage emotion, but it is also used to express emotion. A prayer meeting or Bible study might offer less of the music and more study and emcouragement.

If you can find a Church that doesn't sing, I'll have to see it to believe it.....as they all say....."make a joyful noise unto the Lord"...emphasis on the noise part I think....

Are you by chance related to Mike Hunt?
