If she truly considers you a friend, she should rejoice for you. If she doesn't, then she is quite selfish isn't she. You are attending school to enhance your life. Any friend would be happy for that. Just tell her, you want something more and you know getting an education is the only way how. She should leave her own personal agenda out of it. Good luck in school. And go for it. Don't stop.

What? If she'd be offended by that, you need to find another boss. There is no big freakin' deal about you going back to school. Just let her know..in a nutshell: "Look, I'm going back to school, and will not be able to work full time due to the courseload I'm going to be taking." Period.
Keep in mind that she might need someone full time, so be prepared to be told that you can't work part time, or you'd have to find other part time work.

I'd say just tell the truth like you told it here. Your reason is completely legitimate; you are merely trying to improve yourself which you have the right to do and is honorable. She should not be offended and it's not like you are leaving to go to a competitor. Just give plenty of notice and offer to help ease the transition in any way possible so as to keep this boss as a potential future reference and friend. Good luck!

if your frienship is that good, invite her to lunch (pay, of course) and tell her then. Let her know what your plans are. Don't just tell her you're going to abandon her, because if you tell her you can only work weekends from now on and you give no explanation, all she will think is, "She's abandoning me." Let her know what it is that you want to do with your career and your life in general. Be completely honest. Don't hold anything back.

First of all, I commend you for going back to school..that's wonderful! Just sit down and talk to her and tell her what you're doing. If she's a really good boss, she'll support you and work with you. Good luck, dear!

I think you yourself have answered your question. I mean if you have good friendship with her, I don't see she will act against your desire of joining the college. Every boss is in a way a kind and understanding person (barring few...!!). Just go ahead and be frank with her....preferably during coffee break and just seek her permission..........chances are sure that she will delightfully agree with your desire....I am sure sure will encourage you.

Be responsible and tell him as soon as possible UNLESS you think he will fire you and then you need to work until you are ready to quit and then tell him. Most employers are glad to see their employees better themselves and if you have a good relationship with him and feel you wont be escorted off the property then tell him as soon as possible so that he can make provisions and he won't feel like you are leaving him hanging.

tell him you'd like to find time to talk about your job, and that you are interested in continuing your education. he will probably be understanding, and if he wants to keep you on the workforce, i'm sure he will work around your going back to school.
