The phrase "flux capacitor" has appeared in more serious contexts. US patent number 6084285 describes a "lateral flux capacitor having fractal-shaped perimeters." The idea being to make a capacitor in an integrated circuit, some of whose capacitance exists between two conductors on a single layer (hence, "lateral"). The device is not a lateral flux-capacitor but a lateral-flux capacitor.
Flux is commonly used in electronics and electromagnetic theory and application, but rarely in the context of a capacitor. In general terms, flux simply means the rate at which some quantity (such as electric charge) passes through a surface (e.g. charge flux). It is speculated that the movie terminology is used fictitiously to represent a new and unknown type of flux.

flux is acuttualy not just the measurement of magnetic fields. You are refreing to magnetic flux. Flux can be used in anytype of flow. Now with what we know are capacitors, a flux capacitor is a device that stores flow. Now what kind of flow? well thats the actuall fiction thing that was used in Back to the future.

If you want to be really retarded about it, you could say that an inductor is technically a flux capacitor. You see, an inductor stores electrical energy in magnetic fields, whereas a capacitor stores an electrical potential difference between to plates.
So if you were ignorant, you could say that a flux capacitor stores electrical energy in magnetic fields (an inductor).

It would help regulate magnetic flux by either storing or releasing flux against a set reference point.

since it is fiction, it COULD, if it existed, do whatever
for instance, the fictional Clux Flapacitator, if it existed, would generate a field that covered the entire earth, that would prevent anyone from being able to enter a meaningless question into a Y!Answers qestion box.

Actually one exists..although if I remember correctly it's for regulation current in either super conductors or semi conductors..I'm not sure which..
