there is one recruit who the DI would kick his butt every day, how does this make a better fighting man?

Well, they have pretty much eliminated the physical violence from boot camp, although the psychological element is still there (even though they're not supposed to swear anymore). However, they're not trying to make you a better fighting man. They're trying to condition people into unquestioning obedience - basically brainwashing you into acclimating to the Marine Corps. Boot camp is also designed to weed out those who will not, for whatever reason, transition well into the military.

I was in prior to the ban on physical contact. When the DI's slapped us around for a violation, they told us that this would be a good day in a POW camp!
It is a lesson on how to stay focused and on task in the turbulent world of combat.
The American civilian is still be world standards a pretty safe and protected environment. One needs to be shown that combat is not a nice and neat fair is fair place.
My time at Parris Island gave me the tools to endure the little pin pricks of life in the civilian world, without falling apart or running for a lawyer for the smallest slight.

physical abuse is not tolerated, and if you were really a Marine you know that - being yelled at sure is. You break people individually down to reform them as a fighting team. I was army and we had wusses who said it was to mean for them too. Having the best military in the world says to me it works.

well, if u were in the marines u should know better than most of us. but id say it makes u tougher, which is obviously needed in battle.

i think it has to do with breaking their will, and training them to do what they're told without asking. when theyre fighting, they have to do whatever their commanding officer tells them and there isnt time for dispute.
