In some cases, they are brainwashed by advertising.

In other cases, they have tried various brands and identified that a certain brand tastes/works/feels/lasts the best and so they stick with what they have decided is a good value for them.

I feel there are many reasons why people buy certain brands. I feel no matter what brands people choose they most likely choose them out of habit or upbringing. Growing up my parents chose alot of the same products. I grew up with these products so I feel I may have a tendency to use them in adulthood. From the kind of soap I use to the type of cereal I used as a child I may also use now as a adult. I feel people as a general rule do not pay attention to other products on the shelf that are cheaper but only to what they are use to buying. We all are creatures out of habit and if it works then that is what we use.

I have no idea why people only get certain name brands. I know that I've got expensive taste when it comes to just about anything. But I also know that I can still look clean in my 4 dollar walmart white tee so why would I buy a 40 dollar white tee just to "advertise" for Abercrombie & Fitch?

I seldom buy name brands. Why pay for the fancy package when generic brands are just as good. Some aren't as good, and some are better.

I try off-brands all the time, and usually it is just as good.

Because once they find something they like at a reasonable price they feel comfortable in getting a "known" taste, quality, whatever.
Consumers are people of habit and they stick to what is familiar to them. It takes fancy advertising, packaging or price to draw a consumer to a different name brand.
Any marketing professional will tell you a company's reputation not only keeps loyal customers but draws new ones by word of mouth.
