A yawn is a reflex of deep inhalation and exhalation associated with being tired, with a need to sleep, or from boredom. The word "yawn" has evolved from the Middle English word yanen, an alteration of yonen, or yenen, which in turn comes from the Old English geonian. Pandiculation is the term for the act of stretching and yawning. Yawning is a powerful non-verbal message with several possible meanings, depending on the circumstances. It is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person.

A yawn is the body's natural response to fatigue. Yawning helps you draw in bigger "servings" of air (oxygen), which helps the body produce more of the energy it needs.
But more often than not, yawning is not enough. No matter how many yawns (or cups of coffee) you take, there is no substitute for a good night's rest (and a good breakfast) to restore your energy.

yawning doesn't mean you are tired. It is a reflex action that indicates you aren't getting enough oxygen to your brain. Pay attention next time you might notice your breathing has become shallow or stopped for a few seconds before the yawning starts.

living beings respond to the circumstances around, consciously and unconsciously. we tend to close our eyelids when some insects fly towards our eyes. its called reflex action.
and also, 'yawning' when consciously done, is an indication of someone getting bored. couples 'yawn' in the vicinity of their partner to indicate that it is time to bed.
