ANyone who has served in the military and been discharged honorably or retired is eligible for a military funeral, although only those who have served in times of war are eligible for burial in military cemeteries. If you want the military present at his funeral, you should contact your nearest military base - they have people who are assigned to be pallbearers and to attend military funerals.

When my dad passed away last year, he didn't get a full fledged military funeral with the gun salute and all, but they did cover his casket with a flag and really honored the fact that he served in the army during the early 50's. And I believed he only served 4 yrs. I pray that your brother in law gets the military funeral he deserves......

At my dads burial, he had an "honor guard detail". It was incredibly touching and such a true honor. It really was amazing and humbling to me the respect and thanks that they gave. (We all need to remember these men and women and their families, pray for them and appreciate them.) I am getting all choked up just remembering it. I feel my Dad did see it and was very touched and appreciative.
Okay, sorry if I got side tracked there.
We were helped by our funeral director. I have provided a link that will have information for you. Good luck.
