I think that lots of people get locked up for crimes they didn't commit- not every crime gets DNA testing. As far as no deterrent, I think that living in prison with the threat of being raped by a man or stabbed is a much stronger deterrent than the death penalty. It makes the misery much longer for the defendant. Also, the death penalty costs too much. It's cheaper to just house the criminal in prison.

I think that's an excellent idea, with modern DNA testing the chances of wrongly convicting someone of a crime that warrants the death penalty is very very slim.

They abolished hanging in 1962 and between 1963 and 1965 Hindley and Brady murdered them children.

You have hit the nail on the head, there is no deterrent. If they wouldn't have abolished hanging when they did, I bet Hindley and Brady would have thought long and hard before they did what they did, and who knows maybe some of them poor children may still have been alive today.

This country has it all wrong. They want to take a leaf out of Americas book, if the crime warrants it, then issue the death penalty.

Williegod is bang on, bollocks to the criminals, it is the victims that we should care about.

For the "Do Gooders", if I raped your child would you consider a jail sentence punishment enough? Don't forget I would probably only serve half of the sentence. No you would not. You would soon change your tune if a crime of this magnitude came knocking at your door !!!

For the Americans - This question is on about the death penalty in the UK.

Modern DNA testing is a wonderful tool, but it can still be contaminated. I don't agree with the death penalty because I believe two wrongs don't make a right plus it is cruel.

There are innocent people in prison, can you imagine what would happen if they were put to death only for society to find out they didn't commit the crime?.

The prisons wouldn't be full if criminals were the only people there. Instead we jail an old pensioner because they didn't pay their poll tax, or a father because he didn't pay maintenance, how dumb is that? No wonder the prisons are full.

No let's keep the death penalty out of the UK thankyou, that's assuming you are speaking about us here.

Bring it back. Someone might be able to help me here but i think it goes something like this.

On the Isle of Man, the death penalty still exists for certain crimes like Murder, Rape etc but they have no sanctioned facilities to carry out the sentence so you have to be transferred to the mainland. The mainland diesn't have anything any more so you just get detained at her majestys pleasure

However, there are 4 offences for which you can still be executed in the Uk. They are

Piracy
Arson in a Naval Dockyard
Treason
High Treason

I think its about time that the gallows were brought back and these offences were re-united with the **** of society.

In addition, any proven sexual offence, murder, terrorism or treasonous offence where the Jury (you) decide that the death penalty should suffice should be honoured

It would save us £1000 per week per person detained. Think about Charles Bronson who is now making money on books about the murders he has commited, an we are paying for his exclusive gym membership. Do you want this person back in society?

The world works like this, we the people elect a representative from our community (MP) to bring our concerns to the forum that makes the policies (Parliament). If you want to change the policies, elect a decent MP or force the one you like to do the decent thing

We could have the most advanced DNA testing done, the jury eyewitness the crime, and the most painless means of death and the "do-gooders " and "bleeding hearts" will still object to the death penalty. The certainty of guilt has no bearing to their objection. The victim(s) is forgotten in all this debate and its becomes only about the "poor" criminal.

They claim the death penalty does not deter crime. How could it when you look at how its currently administered?

Did you know? Much of human behavior is governed by their genes. So, how much is a person responsible for the crime they commit is the question. Don't believe me? ask genetics experts. There have been research papers dealing on the subject.

Forget death penalty.....consider whether an individual should be punished at all or not.

Hopefully, never because the death penalty is unjust and cruel way to inflict punishment on the guilty. Others may not agree with my point of view on this matter but as a civil and Liberal as well as being a democratic society, we must operate the way that shows that we have advanced in human rights.

Difficult one - what if people began planting other people's dna at crime scenes?

For sex crimes I am all in favour of indelible chemical castration.. their rights should be neglible when those infringe on the lives of law abiding innocent victims
