try Free To Air, its down quite a bit but there are lots of free channels, but mostly they can be programed on the net and receive "other" channels.

Can't go direct to the tv as when they are coming in they are only at about a 5 watt signal and it is digitized as well. You will need a satalite antenna with a receiver. The Sat andtenna receives the signal, small as it is, and concentrates the signal to the receiver in the dish, the small thing on the arm that sticks out in front of it. It goes from there to the receiver that boosts the signal to a point that it is usable and then decodes it and sends it to your tv set. Used to be that you needed only the dish and the receiver but now you need the provider also so you will have to pay for it each month like with cable. Difference is that with this you cannot pirate it as you can with cable as they are all computer controlled and you have a card that comes in the receiver that they control, a smart card, they call it. They can tell what you watch, when you are watching and how long you have it on.

Yes to watch satellite TV you have to have a dish and a receiver, to get cable you have to have a cable supplied from the cable co.

All I can say is of course you need a satelite. The only reason I say that is because the signals from the satelite are turned into data from the satelite that is rotating the earth. That makes sense to me however I don't know the technical terms but..Hope that helps.
