beta is a testing phase. it's the first draft so to speak of a new program and they use it to test to see where all the bugs were that they may have missed.

When a software product is released to the public, it goes through various testing stages. Once the product is defect free, companies often release it to users like you and me to try it. This version of the software is good enough to be used, but it is possible that there may be features which users might not be happy with. This is the beta product. When these users report problems or ideas to the company that made the software, the makers change it suitably and then issue a final, good release. This process is known as beta testing.

Companies usually test their products before releasing it to the public. The test phases goals are to discover bugs and fix them. In addition, the companies solicit testers for comments on features to add or remove. It is during this developmental state that a product is said to be in "beta." The chronological order of a product is alpha > beta > final. "Alpha" and "beta" are from the Greek alphabet where alpha = A and beta = Beta.

when a product is to be released the makers release a test version before the final version to get feedback from the users n to make sure they have got rid of all the bugs.. a beta may not necessarily be perfect it can have numerous bugs causing u to lose ur data, etc however, if u wanna try out something new before it gets released for everyone u may opt for a beta.. beta comes after alpha releases.. alpha releases are extremely buggy n too risky to use on a regular basis

My understanding is that its still in its testing phase, but just about finished. That's why a lot of new features start out as BETA, and as they evolve, the Beta is dropped.

basically "beta" means "work in progress",like the latest vista beta,it is avalible for download to the public so they can test it ,and then the developers can sort any bugs that the public may find and sort them out before it is officially released
there are also "alpha" releases which are basically 40 to 50% completed,you dont see many of them

It's the early stages of software.. it goes Alpha, then Beta (then versions after Beta), then finally they realease the software. Beta is to test the software for bugs, glitches, and such.

BETA is a software in its testing phase. It is almost complete but released before to know public reaction and also create some hype(as in case of VISTA)
beta is 2nd alphabet in greek before alpha.
so
Alpha=Release
Beta=Pre-release(before alpha)
