It's called sleep paralysis.
Have a talk with your doctor about it... it's nothing dangerous though so don't worry... it can just be a little scary sometimes.

It's called sleep paralysis or hypnopompic paralysis:

That's happened to me before, especially if I take a nap during the day and I haven't had much sleep the night before...I can lay there and hear the TV, but I can't move at all or even open my eyes. It's like my mind is awake, but my body isn't awake yet. Nothing's wrong, and you're not sleeping too much.

Personally, I have never had the experience you describe. However, I have friends who tell me that it happens to them all the time. All in all, I bet I could find 20 maybe 24 people with this condition. A few have told me that they have seen their doctor and one has a sister who is a psychologist-all were told it is normal for some people to have that experience.

Take it easy, relax a bit and don't worry-you are normal.

No.. .nothing's wrong with you! This usually happens to people who don't move AT ALL during sleep... While their body remains immobilized for hours, you sort of get "frozen in that poisition since most of your growing is done while you sleep....!!!! Sometimes, if you stand up too fast after sleeping, you'll go blind for a while!!!!! But that's another answer for another question...

It's happened to me when I wake up from a dead sleep. I mean from the depths of dreamworld to clawing my way to conscienceness. My body doesn't respond at all, just my mind knowing that I'm waking up. Brain signals need to catch up to reality. Lemme tell ya, it's scary because I'm aware of it.
~Maybe it's the same what you went through.
