The vet doesn't know what it is.

Could be ringworm. Put Lamisil cream on it and see if it goes away. Or go to the vet and have them diagnose it. If it is ringworm, it will spread and people will get it also. Get a large tube of Lamisil.

Try an allergy med from the vet it could be something on the carpet like a powder, something she just gets into once in a while, or if she goes outside some thing blooming in the grass which can be common. Good luck

Call your Vet. & get your Cat checked. The Cat aparently picked up something, & its unconfortable for your Cat, so get some help from a Vet.
