There is no commonly accepted definition for religion. It has been debated for a number of years among scholars.
If someone tells you they know what it means they are lieing to you.
All religion however, follows riturals and rules, not just christianity. And many of the rituals came from Pagan religions thousands of years older then christianity.

JAMES 1:27
27) Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
The fatherless and widows are ALL of those who do not have the truth of God. Those who have not an understanding of how deep sin can truly get.
Undefiled means: not to corrupt, or damage, or pollute, or destroy something or someone.
Christian means to be Christ-like. Your ways are the ways of Christ. Listen in
1 PETER 4: 16 it says
16) Yet if any man suffer as a christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
Saying that if any man SUFFERED or SUFFERS as Christ has. Let him not be ashamed. The Kingdom of God is at hand. I pray for you. Amen

My dictionary says that religion is a system of faith and worship: pious practice: piety. It also says that a religionist is a bigot or devotee. That is interesting isn't it? But then again my dictionary says that Catholic means Universal liberal: pertaining to all Christians; pertaining to the Church of Rome---n. A member of the Church of Rome.
It was written in 1867 by the Merriam brothers.

You're gonna love this. The root word for religion, religo/religare, is to tie or bind. Religion says it is Man's attempt to reach God, but the root word seems to suggest it's really about control.
Christianity, however, is not a religion. It is a relationship with the Creator through Jesus Christ. True, religions have sprung from this base, but the religions are not Christianity.

Christianiy is the practise of following Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. The honorable rituals set forth in the gospels are communion, water baptism, and to honor the sabbath.
To be part of a religion (in my own words) is to honor any particular sect or teaching is such a way that it becomes your way of life. Religion is a presentation of a lifestyle choice in respect to a god or leader.
