False prophet is a label given to a person who is viewed as illegitimately claiming charismatic authority within a religious group. The individual may be seen as one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy, or who uses that gift for demagogy or evil ends. Joseph Smith testified to having seen Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (as two separate beings) who told him that the true church had been lost, and restored to him various keys to organize and lead the true Church of Christ. Joseph Smith, with the assistance of various scribes (to record), claimed to have translated the Book of Mormon from a set of Golden Plates. One of the most amazing ironies of Mormonism hinges on its central tenet that it was founded by Joseph Smith, who claimed that he was called of God to re-establish Christ's true Church on the earth. The Mormons revere Joseph Smith as a true prophet of God and the holy man upon whom God himself laid this authority to administer God's people and usher in this last dispensation of time. If his claims to having seen God and Christ and receiving his prophet-hood and authority from them were really true, two very important things would follow.
First, the Christian world would have to recognize that the "New Testament" era was over. To understand this one needs to understand the place of the "office" of prophet. The calling of the Old Testament prophet was "One to whom and through whom God spoke....their messages were very largely the proclamation of the Divine purposes of salvation and glory to be accomplished in the future." (Vine's Expository Dictionary, page 904). They were the pointers to Jesus!
In Luke 16:16, the Lord clearly stated, "The Law and the Prophets were until John: Since that time the Kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it." The time for declaring the forthcoming of the Kingdom was over; the kingdom itself was now to be declared by the Son himself!
Hebrews 1: 1-2 makes it even clearer. "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds." This was said after Christ had risen and the church was in operation. No prophet was appointed to be the head of the church and spokesman for God. Christ had fulfilled that empty office in His own right when he said, "It is finished." Yet as we read in Corinthians, notice that the gift of prophecy was active in the Church....but not anywhere in the headship of the church.

False Prophet: A religious loonie who preaches in a way that the majority of other religious loonies finds distasteful. Also note that at any time, with an appropriate shift in opinion, any false prophet can become a true prophet, and any true prophet can suddenly become false.
Is Joseph Smith one? I guess that depends on which religious lie you find appealing.

A false prophet is a person who claims to be a prophet but was never called by God to be a prophet. Jesus Christ taught how we can know whether a prophet is a true prophet or a false prophet. Jesus taught (Matthew 7:15-20) "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or thigs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."
To know whether Joseph Smith is a true prophet, one must use this test that was provided by Jesus Christ. Did Joseph Smith bring forth good fruit or corrupt fruit? One of the fruits of Joseph Smith is a Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon contains a promise to all who will read it that if they will ask God in the name of Christ if the book is true God will manifest the truth of it by the power of the Holy Ghost. I have prayed about the Book of Mormon and God has answered my prayers and let me know the truth of the Book of Mormon by the power of the Holy Ghost. Because I know the Book of Mormon is a true book of scripture, I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The only way we can know the truth is by going directly to the source of all truth, that is ask God in prayer.
As for the guy above me, keepitsafe, these are misrepresentations of what Joseph Smith taught. Joseph Smith never taught that Jesus would come before 1900, Josph Smith taught that we don't know when Jesus will come. He didn't teach that the eastern U.S. will sink deep into the sea. As for church headquarters being in Independence, Missouri, last time I checked the world hasn't ended yet. The church headquarters will be in Independece, Missouri in the future. Joseph Smith did prophesy of the Civil War, he even prophesied that the rebellion would begin in South Carolina. Then he prophesied that after the Civil War, war would continue to be on the earth and would spread throughout the entire earth until the coming of Christ. War has continually been being fought throughout this period. It's easy to make false arguments when you don't give specific sources of where you got your information.

Joseph Smith issued an astounding number of false prophesies, among these was the prophesy that Jesus would return before 1900, that the Eastern US would sink into the sea, that the Church would have its headquarters on the sight of the Garden of Eden, which is Independance, Missouri!! That the Civil War would turn into a World War! It goes on and on. Mormons will never acknowlege Joe's wacky flights of fancy simply because BILLIONS of dollars depend on them keeping the twisted illusion of Joseph's status of a prophet alive!!

Why is he not a False Prophet? Because we choose to believe that he's not. It really isn't that complicated. You believe he is, we believe he isn't.
Holistically, what is it the makes you more right than us? And conversely, what makes us more right than you? It's simply by believing one way or another.
This isn't a cop-out answer. It's just the way things are. You obviously don't like Mormon theology. I love it. You're not going to convince me I'm wrong and I'm sure that no one is going to convince you that you're wrong. So we go our separate ways. I find strength and hope in my beliefs--I hope that you have something that does the same for you. It's a sad world if you don't have a belief system to assist you in life.
