I'm asking my friend to sing a solo during the wedding ceremony. She has a great voice... very delicate and beautiful. I'm not sure what song I'd like for her to sing though. Does anyone have any good ideas?.. She can sing mostly any kind of song wonderfully. Something classy and delicate would be nice though. Ideas?

It is a religious ceremony. The church has 50 foot high ceilings (gothic cathedral style) so the vocals will be good there. The solo will most likely be after I get up there but before the vows and 'to do' about us happens. The song can be done acapella, with piano, pipe organ or with cello, guitar.. really anything. I'd like it to come across as classy (a classic or traditional love song would be great). I mostly just asked her because I'd like a good soloist and I really like her voice. I'm not sure exactly what kind of message I want to get across just yet. (Good questions.. thanks)

We didn't have drinking or dancing at our wedding and (most) people thought is was refreshing to actually get to socialize and not be subjected to loud music and drunken booty dancing bridesmaids. I would try to keep the music kind of laid back and classy to avoid that! Also, people are going to bug you to dance all night! Watch out :) I like the idea of the bouquet dance. You could also take the bouquet apart and give a flower to your moms and grandmas.... maybe add aunts and other special women if you have a large bouquet. If you think it would work, you could have your DJ or a family member pass a microphone around for "open mic time." Everyone could get a chance to congratulate you and tell stories. During the ceremony, I think you should keep it simple. We didn't have a unity candle but one thing other brides told me is that it was awkward to have a whole song devoted to the lighting of the candle which only takes 30 seconds. The rest of the time you're up there with nothing to do. Anyway, I think simple ceremonies are less stressful and mean just as much. Good luck and best wishes on your wedding day!

I need a little more information... What kind of ceremony are you having? When in the ceremony do you want this? If you are having a relgious ceremony, you might run into all sorts of guidelines. Do you have a pianist lined up or will this be a capella? What message do you want the song to convey? Does it have a purpose or do you just want her to sing cuz you love her and love her voice?
Anyway, I'm thinking "When I Fall in Love" as a thought. I personally go for more classic love songs, so I would look to jazz, standards, and more "folk" music. Cole Porter, Gershwin, guys like that have some great love songs.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of the couple who's been together the longest getting the bouquet--unless you're talking about your married for fifty two years grandparents. Weddings are often awwwwwkward for dating couples. Unless they're both drunk and haven't been together very long. Then they're fun. Singling out the people you think should get married next may be a huge, huge embarrassment for that couple. Trust me on this one: one of my girlfriends once made like she was going to toss the bouquet but walked over and handed it to me and said "hurry the h*ll up already." We all laughed but yikes that was an awkward car ride home. You might try asking your grandparents or other older relatives to share their best advice for marriage. That's always sweet, and a great way to honor them during the reception.

"A Moment Like This" is a good choice - considering that's my husband's and my song!
Also "Endless Love" is a classic, "At Last" Etta James, but that's more bluesy, and "Because You Loved Me" Celine Dion.
I don't know many "delicate" tunes, sorry!

"Grow Old With Me" sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter; written by John Lennon http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Grow-Old-With-Me-lyrics-Mary-Chapin-Carpenter/FDB31987D5759C3948256938000E2966
Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love
