A NM is 1.15 times a SM. All the other guys that say otherwise are wrong. I have made this conversion thousands of times over the past several years as both a pilot and a licensed 3rd mate.

1.15 stature miles per hours (land mph) is 1 nautical mile per hour (knots). So 36 knots x 1.15 = 41.4 stature miles per hours (land). To convert from miles per hour (sm) to nautical miles per hour (knots) you multiple the by 0.87 (i.e., 41.4 sm/hr[mph] x .87 = 36 nm/hr [knots])/
Pilots like to use nautical (knots) miles per hour because of its relationship to navigation in that 1 nautical mile is the 1 minute on the longitudinal axis. 60 minutes = 1 degree and 90 degrees from equator to North Pole. It is convenient and easy for pilots to use this speed reference.

I say a knot is 1.2 mph so 36 times 1.2 would be 43.2 mph.
