Resistance training, absolutely. With appropriate diet. After all, you don't want to gain 10 pounds of fat.

Obviously you want to get with a trainer to design your workout and diet in detail, but here is a general idea of what you can expect. Depending how hard you want to work, you can:

work into doing each muscle group twice a week (upper body, lower body, rest, upper, lower, rest) and eating equal amounts of carbs and protein (about 1 g protein/pound of body weight); or you can

go whole hog and train each muscle group only once a week (but with more exercises, so divided up into four days), and eat 2 or even 3 grams of carbs for each gram of protein (amount of protein same as above).

This second variant is more or less what the pros are doing, but don't let your trainer tell you he 'doesn't train women that hard' if you've already been doing the 2-day variant for a month or so, if you find that more would be better - I *had* to move to the four-day routine because I was training too hard to regenerate in three days, whether my trainer liked it or not. At any rate, getting enough carbs is REALLY key to gaining weight.

Let me warn you though: if you are skinny, you may *have* to take the hard-work version, complete with appropriate diet, if you want to gain weight. So:

1. You'll be working out at the gym four days a week, for 1-1.5 hours each time, with a day off, say, every three days or so. Ask your trainer about doing cardio on the off days - s/he may or may not tell you it's better to rest.

2. And you'll be eating four meals a day (two heavy and two light), making sure one heavy is 45 minutes or so before your workout, and the other heavy, afterward. If you manage to eat those four meals, then you shouldn't need protein or carb supplements - even if you are a vegetarian.

3. You'll be sleeping 8 or 9 hours a night (VERY important - that's when the growth you want actually takes place).

Yes, every pound will be a battle, but you'll gain weight and be shapelier and healthier instead of fatter. You will also be making an investment in a healthy old age, because resistance training slows down or even reverses basically all of the 'symptoms' of aging - keeping your bones strong even after menopause for starters.

I wish you all the best, may God bless you.

THIS IS WAT I GOT FROM MY RESEARCH!!!!!
Weight gain should always be in the form of muscle, not fat. If you think you’re too thin and want to gain weight, don’t just stuff yourself with food, especially high fat foods. To build muscle, start a weight-bearing exercise program and make healthy food choices. Be sure to get a medical checkup before you start any exercise program.Stay away from bad fat! Even though weight gain is your goal, you don't want to be gaining fat and eating junk. Get rid of the chips and candy. No more fast food, nothing fried. Stick to high protein, low (saturated) fat foods like tuna fish (and other seafood), chicken breast, turkey, lean meats, rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables, nuts, flax seed oil, etc.WATER! Drink water!but it's that water that will give you the energy you need to gain that weight! Sleep! YES! Sleep! The easiest, yet most over looked step. Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. You're gonna need it!
SORRY IF ITS A LITTLE MORE INFO THAN U NEEDED LOL

Be a kid once again! When eating out, order any child’s sandwich, pizza or burger. Then you can have the treats you love, while reducing your portions and lowering your calorie intake.
