He has a F 150 302 1990. He is loosing coolent some where. Also he burns oil every so often going down hill. He thinks his either running rich or lean. Could a bad head gasket which would leak some coolent and oil cause the engine to run rich or lean?

Not really sure which direction your going here, but if you got a blown head gasket, your in for alot more trouble than burning oil. These trucks are computer controlled, and really can't run lean, or rich. He had done tune up stuff on it right? If you see no leaks anywhere, double check your oil dip stick. Specially in the start of the day. There you should be able to tell if you have coolant in your oil pan. As water is heavier thn oil, it will go to the bottom. If its there, then you have an internal leak, and are causing plenty of damage to that engine when its running. But look real close to where your coolant is coming from(leaking), may be as simple as a radiator cap not holding the pressure, thus making it boil out.

Found on Road Dead or What!!

A Head Gasket is an obivous choice for loosing Coolant and Oil, also dependingon the type of leak yes on the running ricj and lean depends on the amount of air getting into the engine block.

In the old days we would shoot a shot of starting fluid at the intake gasket. If the motor reved up you knew you had an intake leak. With the efi being so big this would be difficult. I would not suggest anybody try this , especially without a fire extinguisher.

The main concern with this engine is leaking upper intake gaskets, which will cause this concern. It is very hard to detect, but very common. The intake gaskets are a weak point, and not a difficult repair. I think this is your problem.
