Yes - they will discount the fare if you present a copy of the funeral program or a copy of the obituary etc. The problem is - the last time we tried to do this - the fare was higher than what we could get on Travelocity. They quote you a price that is based on their highest fare - then discount it. You might go ahead and call the airline to check. The fare is called a "bereavement fare". Be sure to check out all your options before booking.

Yes, most regular airlines (American, United, etc) offer compassion or bereavement fares.

Discount airlines do not (Southwest, JetBlue, etc)

You have to call the airline as these fares are not available online, and have the name and phone number of the funeral home handy because they will call and check.

Shop around for tickets because you may be able to get a last minute discount ticket that is cheaper than a bereavement fare on a regular airline.

The bereavement fare is only a discount off the full fare price.. They will give it to you by phone, and you have to show proof of a funeral in your family.. Really.

Call the airlines. They used to typically offer a bereavement fare, but I believe that you have to supply them with a copy of the death certificate to get it. Cold, but that's the only way they can ensure that people don't abuse this courtesy.

Trying to get that funeral airfare myself a few months ago. There is no CHEAP or FREE or DISCOUNTED fares.

It's up to the airline. Ask for bereavement fares.

There are no cheap flights for funerals, baby.
They may even charge you more.
You only get cheap tickets when the flight is empty.
