Well to burn you need special software like Nero, Rxio etc. If u r using XP then u can use XPs built in burner to burn CDs and DVDs. To burn using XPs built in burner Right Click on the burner> Propertise> Recording> Check Enable CD Recording On this Drive Select the Temporary Files Drive ( select a drive which has the most free space) and Writing Speed. And to burn Copy and Paste to the CD/DVD RW drive then select Write These files to the CD.

Has it ever written a disk or are you just starting to try this out?

If it has just developed this problem it may well need lens cleaning otherwise it may never have done it at all in the place. Was there any unusual circumstances when it developed this problem. IE did windows crash while burning a CD or something like that. Have you had a virus recently?

Most hardware vendors normally keep up to date drivers for their current hardware it may be worth checking their website for the latest driver. They may have discovered a problem and fixed it through a driver or a patch for an app.

Unless you're running MS-DOS, you shouldn't need a driver. If the system is no longer seeing the drive, it's usually time for a new drive.

To check for sure, go here:

http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/cdrom/

Follow the directions to make a bootable floppy disk that will load CD-ROM drivers. If you boot your PC from the disk and it still doesn't see the drive, you need a new drive. If it sees the drive, it's a problem with your Windows installation.

it doesn't need drivers in windows, try cleaning the laser with a good cd cleaner disk, if it still doesn't work, the laser is bad or it is out of adjustment, just get a new one

I've been using Ashampoo for these very special "burning tasks". You can download it for free here http://bit.ly/1lAUlIW
I strongly recommend it.
