Most airlines if not all have what is called a bereavement fare. If you request this fare you will have to provide the name of the funeral home and the information will be verified. The deceased must be immediate family like a parent, sibling, grand parent, aunt or uncle..someone first generation. Not a close family friend for example.

Sometimes the bereavement fare is not cheaper than the lowest published fare, so ask the agent to check both. Usually the lowest fare available is what is applied and of course all fares are available to any passenger.

Call the airlines and tell them you need to go to a funeral of a family member usually they will give you the discount if you can show proof that a family member has passed and when the funeral is.

You have to have proof of the decease person from the hospital, the local district or the funeral home. Show that to the airline.
So far it worked w/i the US n Canada. I'm not sure about International but you can always call the airline up and check. Good luck.

[EDIT 31 JULY]

According to Wikipedia, the following airlines can take you to the US NON-STOP:

Lufthansa (1-800-645-3880)
United (1-800-241-6522)
American (1-800-433-7300)
US Airways (800-428-4322)
Delta (1-800-221-1212) > Delta is in bankruptcy, FYI
Continental (1-800-525-0280)
Northwest (1-800-225-2525) > NWA is in bankruptcy, FYI

Hope this helps!

[END EDIT]

The only way to get the fare discount for funerals is to call the airline. I bet all airlines do it, just give them a call.

Can you tell us where you live exactly in Germany, so I can give you reference to airlines that'll serve the airport nearest you?

I don't know if you get a discount, but I believe that most airlines will give you priority on a flight for such events.
It's always best to verify with the air carrier.
