she has just had her first and only litter, but she wont pick up the puppies when they escape the box. The first one she birthed scared her by screaming when she tried to pick it up.

Many moms will do that, especially if they are under 2 1/2 years old..It just makes your job all the harder, and there is no way that i know of to change her maternal instncts....
It can also be breed related, as Many Dobermans are never skilled moms.

There is no reason she needs to pick them up. Why are they escaping the box as newborns???????? You need a more secure box if newborns are getting out!!! I have been breeding dogs for a while and none of my bi tches have ever needed to pick a puppy up.

You can gently rub a favorite toy or item of hers onto the puppies. Show her what to do, and if she still refuses, this is okay. It actually might be in her instincts. Check to see if her babies are weak. If they are, they might not be able to stand being picked up, it might be considered roughhousing.
