According to cognitive psychologist Daniel Dennett, the deja vu experience is the result of random firings of a "familiarity detector" in the brain. I did some work around this earlier in the summer, and it turns out that there are many reasons to believe that we have such a detector. Since a full deja vu experience could be produced by a very possible glitch in that detector's firings, it's a very appealing explanation.

My own personal explanation for deja vu is that the working memory - conscious awareness - temporarily loses track of which input is from the senses and which is from long-term memory. If we believed that the information coming in through our senses is instead coming from long-term memory we would have full deja vu experiences.

Now, when you talk with people about deja vu they'll typically tell you that it can't be anything that simple, because they actually do know what's going to happen before it actually happens. But notice that they tell you AFTER it happened. In fact they only THINK they know it before it happens. There's no need for a supernatural explanation of how they predict the future, because in fact they don't. They only believe that they did.

For your project, read the fascinating NYTimes article I've listed as a source.

Uhhh.... The "feeling" of deja vu may exist, but the actual "I've been here before" thing does not. Hard to argue when you start with a flawed beginning premise...

is there a religious explanation or deja-vu?
just go with science and if someone complains don't argue just say they can believe what they want but your going with the evidence

First thing I want to say is I love your name! I hate him too. Secondly, why do you think it has to be religious? I am not a Christian and I have them all the time. I dream about things that happen and then a week or month or so it comes true. I don't believe it is religious at all. I believe it is more psychic than anything and I believe it can be built on with religion or experience.
