first off... what does his doctor say about it?is he tall? is he healthy overall? active? does he eat a lot of junk food/sweets? i ask because my son is also 9 and weighs 125 pounds and our doctor isn't terribly concerned about it. he's aware of what kinds of foods my son eats -a lot more healthy then most other 9 year olds from what i hear- and how much "exercise" he gets, which is a fair amount. also, my son is almost 5 feet tall... we just make 'em big in our families! *shrugs* our 5 year old is almost 4 feet tall and he weighs about 65 pounds. i say, my kids are healthy, strong big boys... not "fat". so many things contribute to what's normal for one kid and not for another. you should really talk to your doctor about it and be sure that they know if diabetes runs in your family... that's the big scare these days with "overweight" kids. another thing... when you say "average" i have to admitt that i feel like a lot of other 9 year old boys just seem pinner and frail compared to my son. the word "average" should maybe be something that only you and your sons doctor talk about because, in my expereince, a lot of people are sensitive to the sizes/shapes of kids these days and comparing really never gets you anything but trouble no matter how innocent your intentions are... been there, done that! TOO many people have commented on how "big" my kids are... think they're older then they are even and then are flabergasted by some of the info. i share with them about my kids. most people will just automatically think that they live off of fast food and crap like that because they're big boys and that's SO far from the truth! don't stress yourself out about it... unless, of course, there is a medical reason behind it... that's a whole different story.

It also depends on how tall he is! But i know a 10 year old who is only 70 pounds and he is pudgy! I would go to your doctor and just check everything out, maybe get a thyroid test done! Just to be safe!
