Ideally, it should only take 4 hours to play 18 holes.
But, that NEVER happens where I play! 4 1/2 hours is more common now. On a busy course on a weekend, 5 hours is not uncommon.
That is forcing more people to consider playing 9 holes. There is a blog post listed below that talks about pace of play in general, and playing 9 holes specifically.

by myself in a cart, on a empty course it takes an hour and half. on resorts, scrambles, nice public courses, sat afternoon's and if there are a bunch of drunks in front of u, or someone that should practice not play then 6 hours or better

4 hours for 18 holes. Unless you have knuckleheads playing infront of you. Then it's up to them.

about 2 hours for 9 holes depending on how many players there are.

It all depends on how big of a hurry you are in and how many people are pushing you and how many people are in front of you!!
