any thing in the servicemens record can be released to him or his family by written consent.. i to am a vietnam veteran and i have done a lot of research for other peoples families.. you can got to ancenstory .com and start there. the mormans are starting to collect some very good records,, but it does take a lot of time. if you know your fathers serial number, his unit, and or what his job was, or any other combitation of things will help,, the more info you have going in is a big help...
depending on what your father did there, part or all of some of these records could bear sealed . this applies for a lot of servicemen,,, they will be sealed untill between 2020-2030 ..
these are suppose to be for national security, in a lot of units in vietnam ,some of their troops had a high level security.
With all due respect to our grovenment, there are some things ,they do not want you to ever know. and most of this is for a good reason. some is not..
the reason for the sealing of some of this info. for so long is , that most of the soldiers by 2020-2030 will have passed away..
As i have stated i too served in vietnam and lost several family members and very good friends there. i am pro military and always will be... my heart goes out to all families today who have loved ones in the military. and fighting for the freedoms that we all enjoy today... the next time you see a solider ,shake their hand, give them a big hug, and tell them ...thank you ,and god bless you....

we all need to really think about the freedoms that we enjoy so much, and to think about how many soliders have died to provide us with this freedom....

have a nice day

Contact the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. If your father is still alive, have him contact them for his file. If he is deceased, as next-of-kin you are allowed to request the file. They have an online form you can use, or you can download and print the Standard Form 180 to fill out and mail in.
