We took Swift and Boo (goffins cockatoos) out to look at puppies earlier. They seemed to like the smaller white dogs best (there was a maltese and a pomeranian which each liked- though they couldn't agree).
Curious to hear what breed of dog and bird other folks have, and how they get along. (I heard that small white dogs can help cockatoos stop plucking somewhere).

The birds have their own room, and the puppy will be crate trained and have it's own baby-fenced off nook (in another room) when we aren't able to supervise it. We plan on getting an 8 week old pomeranian or papillon.

I used to have a cockatiel that was in love with the family dog. It was a mutt, about thirty pounds and the bird would ride around on it's neck, hanging on to the collar. The dog would try to scrape off the bird by walking under chairs, and the bird would make a racket whenever the dog left the room

I have two Congo African Greys, a Senegal, a Lineolated Parakeet, a Green-Cheek Conure and a Pacific Parrotlet. I also have two dogs, a Pomeranian and a Rat Terrier.

My dogs show the birds a great deal of respect and have never shown any aggression at all...still I would not leave the birds out in the smae room with the dogs and unsupervised at any time.

The Greys know the dogs by name and frequently call them and give them commands. They will also climb to the bottom of the cage and toss pellets to the dogs. They seem to enjoy watching and teasing the dogs a great deal with their barks, calls and taunts.

I've never heard that small white dogs can prevent a cockatoo from plucking and I am highly doubtful.

I have 2 older mixed breed dogs and they both respect our Parrots, besides they would like to keep their noses attached to their faces. Since we had the birds when the dogs were puppies they learned not to bother the birds and they also learned what happens if you bother a bird.

All I can say is get a puppy and always supervise their time with the birds, even though a puppy may only be playing should they accidently bite the bird and break the skin it could be fatal if a Vet can't get to the bird in time with the correct medicine.

As long as they are not in actual physical contact, I think your dog can learn to respect the bird's space and vice versa. Dogs are predators by nature and their saliva is fatal to a birds' bloodstream. Once a dog has mouthed and punctured a birds' skin, the bird has approx 48 hrs before it dies from toxins. A vet may be able to save the bird, but this is very costly and traumatic for the bird.
We own 3 dogs and 10 birds and there is absolutely NO CONTACT between the species. Why take chances?

Of my birds, Sunny, my black-headed caique loves to chase my dog. Our dog is a Beagle-Spitz mix. It's important to be cautious with birds around dogs though, so we're always supervising. But my caique and my dog get on very well, he will usually chase the dog and they will kind of play around (although my dog always keeps a distance). We also have a sun conure and a budgie who really don't care for the dog either way, and neither does our dog.

Your goffins would be bigger then my caique so that might make them a good size for a small dog. I have to stress though, make sure you socialize your dog and always supervise to avoid accidents.
Good luck

I have a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and Puli and two African Grey parrots, all of whom get along splendidly. Once, one of my parrots was startled and jumped off his perch (his wings are clipped) and fluttered onto Leo's, the GSMD, nose. Leo is well-trained but it caught me by surprise how calm he was about the situation. I told him "Leo, stay!" and he did not move an inch. He just wagged his tail after.
