When my husband and I took our grandchildren on a car journey for the first time and it was a long trip I taught them to knit--using only plain stitch. We had a competition to see whose teddy had the longest scarf. Another time we took old fashioned card games like Happy Families and Old Maid. Quite easy to play in the back of people carriers with quite small children. They are usually so amazed at old-fashioned games that quite a bit of time is used in looking at what you have brought along and explaining their uses. The knitting was a big hit. Younger kids can use French Knitting kits which you can still buy.

I normally do the driving so that doesn't leave me time to do anything else.If you are a passenger though, it can be quite boring because in three hours you will have covered all the topics for conversation. Good music helps me a lot especially when I am alone. Frequent breaks for coffee or a snack can help to alleviate the monotony as well.

so long as you're not on a motorway you can play pub cricket - each of you looks out of the window on your side and you get points for the number of legs of each creature featured in a pub name on your side eg the crown is 0, the fox counts as 4, the dog and duck is 6. The Cricketers would usually win a game as you get 44 for two teams of eleven men

We play a game called red car. The first person to announce the red car they see gets a point. Kinda dumb but it passes the time.
