Manhattan is built on bedrock- Subwy tennuls are are various debpts, some quite deep. We also have tunnels under the river.

What you see as mahattan is not the original look. It was graded and put in a grid pattern.

The subway are always getting flooded due to heavy rainfalls.

Trains go out of service and you have to take another route.

the Subways often flood... not enough floor drains to pull water away...
