I would like to try to view birth records by name in new york city and find out how many people were born in new york city on a particular day in the 1970's. can i access public records to find out the number and names of these people? i would also like to know for statistical purposes the number of people born with a particular first name - is this information publicly available. i am sure it is in the hundreds or thousands, but i am happy to go through those records, esp. if they are computerized.

i saw that to get a birth certificate you need to be that person, but i don't want or need copies of any birth certificates i just want to know if i can view birth records and see listings of names for a particular day?

any help much appreciated

No can do. Federal privacy laws prohibit release of this info for 72 years from the date of the event if the people involved are not giving their permission and are still alive. Check back in another 50 years or so if you're still interested.

i don't know how much details you can retrieve, but you should start by going to the county recorders office.
