would you use the shotgun to prevent the possibility of a bullet going through the person and hurting someone else or the revolver to minimize the mess you had to clean up?

I will use a grenade if necessary
I don't mind cleaning up chunks of flesh and bone!

Shotgun with buckshot may still travel through walls and strike an innocent. A good site to see how rounds react to drywall is www.theboxotruth.com.

A shotgun must be operated with two hands, that makes it harder to use a flashlight, move your kids, or dial the police if their is an intruder in the house. Expecially with the added panic. It will also make it take longer to aquire your target if you have the gun dropped with one hand while opening a window or a door to let your kids out, dial a telephone, or move a baricade. It is long and not very manuverable through a house at full leingth, especially in the dark, and may be noisy. And it is also easier for you to be disarmed of a shutgun at a corner. It will take you FOREVER to swing a shotgun from aiming at one intruder on one side of the hallway, if you find out there is another one at the other side of the hallway, or even a narrow doorway! Reloading (if you had to) is way too slow, and could get someone killed. Retrieving a loaded shotgun kept under the bed is a slow and noisy process, and may cost you the initiative, and maybe your life. You can not run as fast with a shotgun, to head off an intruder from entering your childrens room for a hostage for example.

Tactically there are many disadvantages to using a shotgun for home defense, think of some on your own. The only advantage
is the brute force it provides, that may in itself be a disadvantage.
And the brute force only applies if you get past the other disadvantages with enough ease to take a shot, first.

Try a .40 or .45 with magazines handy. Make a safe room, have a plan for the kids. Make sure your wife can shoot, and have a gun for her, too.

PS: for all those people who say "kick him in the nuts" "gouge his eyes" "call the police" "hit him with a bat" - what if he has a bat? a knife? a friend? a gun?

I would use the Taurus 45cal. There is no chance of survival for him when hit with 230 grains of blood thirsty bullets. No chance that the stranger could live and potentially sue me for hurting him. The shotgun is a great alternative as being hit in the head with #8 shot at close range could be exciting to watch. Too much risk of only injuring them though.

Firstly, u should have seen to it u have secured besides ur doors the entire house well & done a check bfore u retire or go out anytime day or night.

If an intruder gets in & confronts u, u have to THINK & LOOK AROUND UR PLACE IF U CAN FIND AN OBJECT U COULD DEFEND URSELF WITH ,,,,NO GUNS AT ALL SHOULD BE USED UNLESS U KNOW KNOW HOW TO USE IT WITH GREAT CARE,,,,,,or U try to run & get locked into a room which u have a telephone in the room to dial for help.

If the intruder is coming on to u, u get hold of any glass objects & U fling it onto a window to CREAT ATTENTION that the neighbours can hear & anything that U can create noise to attract any attention bfore the "VILLIAN" ATTACKS U. Opent eh window to shout as loud as u can is another thing. Get into a hysterical mood ,,,,,,perhaps that intruder will run off if he/she thinks U have attracted enough attention.

Find any sharp object & PROD INTO THIS VILLIAN IF u R ATTACKED. SCRATCH AL OVER HIS FACE & ANYWHERE U CAN TO GET HIS BLOOD ,,,,,FOR DNA TEST IN CASE U R DEAD.

Hell... I'd grab the bat right next to my bed... But if anything... I'd use the revolver... Reason: If you woke up to someone trying to get in or who was in... Would you really be alert enough to aim and shoot right with the shotgun?

But I am also a fan of the shotgun... So I'd say personal preference... You also would have to be a fair shot with them anyway... otherwise you could do more damage to other things...

I can detain anyone. I don't need a gun. I would pick up the closest weapon and take out the ability for them to move.

Then I would ask them what the heck they are doing and if they need some help.

I guess you have never been involved in this type of situation. You won't have the time to analyze - you only will have time to make a very very brief assessment and act (or don't act in which case you will probably be killed). You will grab the first weapon available, aim, and shoot (after ordering the suspect to freeze - if they do not, they are history).

Just be sure to make it permanent.

This dilemma faces the police quite a bit (not everyday like they think -- perhaps once or twice a year).

I actually thought about asking a similar question like this yesterday..but what if you didn't have a gun...What if I awoke to someone in my bedroom? I told my family if something like this would happen..there would defiantly be DNA all over the place...also look for a Person with a Missing Nose or Cheek..or Penis..Some body part would be left behind where the person would have to explain what happened.

I don't have a firearm. Hopefully the broken table leg next to my bed would be adequate.

From reading all these answers, I'd say it's fairly dangerous to break into any mans house; So many bats and what. Watch out if I'm in the kitchen...boiling water or better yet Jell-o (my wife and I discussed wether or not you'de lose your eyelids to super hot jell-o).

i DID wake up with a stranger in my house a couple of weeks ago- it was actually 3 strangers and they all had guns, so neither a shotgun, nor a revolver would have made any difference because they already had guns pointed at me...

guns are stupid

The best thing to do is to purchase what is called a safety slug, it is plastic coated shot that is fired from your handgun, but will not even penetrate a sheetrock wall. I think they are called Glazier Safety Slugs. Go to the Sporting Goods Store and Check em out
