As a preschool assistant for the past 14 years let me tell you this. Some children do start reading at 4 yrs. of age But in order too read they must first know all the letters of the alphabet and their sounds because in order to read they must be able to sound out each letter, and put them together to know what the word is. So concentrate on teaching him/her the letters and the sounds and the reading will come later.

Yes - it is too early to worry about this. I would not be concerned unless she was still having problems by the middle of first grade. In the meantime , do what you can at home to expand her vocabulary. Talk to her and read to her daily. Buy books with Cd's that she can listen to on her own. This helps children make the connection that words and letters have meanings. Make sure she knows her alphabet and that she can link sounds the letters make to objects. A good way to do this is to make an alphabet book with her. For example: Write the letter B on the page and cut out pictures from magazines that begin with the B sound. ( Not to mention that the cutting activities are also a good developmental skill to work on.) If your local library has children's activities or story hour - enroll her in these and go to the library with her. It is important that a child sees their parents read also.
In the meantime - relax and enjoy her childhood. They grow up so quickly!

Yes, you should worry for next year she will be 5 than 6...and some children develop quicker than others but to set your mind at ease just read books to her. She doesn´t necessarily have to know the words or how to spell. If she sees the word cat and its c a t than she´s aware of the letters. Ever in doubt get her tested. Ever in doubt get reading materials. Just never force her to read. Let her do it herself. If you want set yourself a timeline if she doesn´t seem to understand or improve. Hére´s some ideas to use but place notes around your house like for example put a sign that spells DOOR or telephone, book, water etc. Basically, do a lot of hands-on training for your child. Play a lot of word games. Like for example, bring mom your Bear...B E A R or go wash your teeth...T E E T H etc so just do what feels right for you and your child. Not all techniques works for all children. This is why you experiment each day with it and set guidelines or deadlines. Good luck...

No, some kids take a longer time to learn than others, but it doesn't mean any thing is wrong. I started reading at age 3, and I'm smart enough, but my sister didn't start reading reading until she was about... 6? It's built into kids personalities as to whether they're going to like to read or not, so maybe she just doesn't like to read yet. Give it time, and get her some flash cards or a fun reading game, but don't force it on her or make her feel dumb cause she'll come around.

Every child develops at his/her own pace.
In Kindergarten, they are still working on ABC's, so not reading by age 4 isn't a huge worry.
That being said - get some books, let your child be used to them and comfortable with them, even if it is only to look at the pictures.
I read Dr. Seuss to my kids. They are loads of fun.
One of my kids was reading before Kindergarten, one learned in Kindergarten, one didn't really do well with reading until first grade.
They are all good readers now that they're older.

YES! She's practically still a baby!!! Have you been reading to her daily? Our daughter has had a book read to her every night of her life from age 6 months to now (age 5)... and she didn't start to pick out familiar words until about 6 months ago.
Why do parents always think there is something wrong with the CHILD...... ((sigh))

It's embarassing for a parent to think thier child is slow. But
there are conditions like dyslexia, which cause certain words to get turned around in a child's vision. Have the child checked for that. Whatever you do, don't let your own hurt feelings cause you to berate the child. But encourage the child. Not having a interest in reading doesn't mean the child is not intelligent.

Most 4 year olds cannot read. You sound like a pushy parent who expects too much of a young child. She will be fine. Most kids read at about the age of 6.
