Most people think of enlightenment as a kind of magical attainment, a state of being close to perfection. At this level, one can perform amazing feats, see past and future lives of others, and tune in to the inner workings of the universe. This may be possible for a number of special beings, but for most of us enlightenment is much more in line with what Suzuki Roshi describes. It means having a quality of "beginningness," a fresh, simple, unsophisticated view of things. To have "beginner's mind" in how we approach things is a major teaching. In many ways, the process of enlightenment is clearing away the thoughts, beliefs, and ideas that cloud our ability to see things as they really are in their pristine form.

Yes once years ago I met such a person. At the time his ideas made no sense to me. They were just to different from what I had been told reality was.
Many years later I started to understand what he had been saying. Soon it all fell into place and started to make sense.
He is long dead but I often wish that I could talk to him now that I understand better what he meant.
Still what he gave me was one of the greatest gifts that I ever recieved.
He was very old when I met him. The thing I remember most about him was his eyes. They seemed always to be smiling. They had a clarity and depth that was almost intimaditing. It was as though when you looked at him directly you could see all the way back to God.

I don't really believe that in todays society that there are very many spiritually enlightened individuals, society is too caught up on materialistic views, money, everyday life, and social activities that they forget why they are actually here on Earth. I have met truly enlightened individuals and their prescence was extremely calming, patience, and peaceful.

As we are all a work in progress in earth life, the enlightened are the seeking who have actually polished a part of themselves to shine a light into the world.

Yes i have. The first time I met my yoga teacher. Just being in the same room as her and standing five feet away from her i could literally feel her presence. all the muscle tension in my body began to relax. As much as I dislike Christianity, I have met a few Christians who have had the same effect on me.
So far i'm the only one that has actually answered your question

What is "supposed to be enlightened," generally isn't.
It is very easy for those that aren't "enlightened" to think they are and also for those who aren't to believe others who aren't, are.

I am one and there are many others. Once you realize the illusionary element in our world, you'll understand what 'enlightenment' is.
