14 hours x $5.25/hr=$73.50. Not a prince's wages, but it'll pay the electric bill...Also, the federal minimum wage is on it's way up, so that'll almost be a 100-dollar day here pretty soon...if your body can take it, that's respectable wages, you shouldn't do manual tasks for more than about 10 hours a day though, it can break you down. Some people have the stamina for that, others don't, I still like my lettuce conveyor idea...lettuce roots don't grow that deep, you could probably put 10 sprouts per tray and it'd do all right, plus there'd be less stoop labor involved, which is hard on your back. Plus, you could automate a good portion of it.
If we can build a railroad and a freeway coast-to-coast, automated farming can't be that much of a stretch. If you REALLY wanted to go high-tech with your farming, you could make it automated hydroponics. Science, it's out there....no reason to work like it's 1925 anymore...

If illegal people were not here, Americans would be doing those jobs for more than $5.25/hr. Overall the cost would not go up drastically if Americans worked those jobs for say, $6.50/hr. In the long run, by being legal American citizens, paying taxes and not being subsidized so largely by federal programs, it would save the Americans more in taxes, even if they had to pay a little more for produce. Most Americans would rather pay a little more for an American to do the job, than an illegal immigrant who gets welfare, food stamps, medical care, low housing. Even if the American got the same assistance, HE is suppose to get it if he is low income and qualifies, the illegal immigrant is NOT entitled to those programs.

Yes, if I had to. But not for long! And then go to school on top of that.
I have had at least two jobs since thirteen years old, (mid 40's ) with no end in sight.
My family came here from a country that did not have the best social and political traditions. We dropped those traits and got on with being American. We owned a business within a few years of coming here, and had a state senator in our family within twenty five.
I cleaned sewers, waited tables, did janitorial, was a maid, mowed lawns, drove truck, carried and M-16 for Uncle Sam (with some top notch Hispanics I might add), shoveled horse crap for hours on end, etc.
Although I spoke English, I had to learn the language(s) of success, math , science, and business. I'm no millionaire, but can now confidently make it in this country. I would adopt the language and economic and legal customs of another country if I moved there, in order to succeed.
Low end, no skill jobs should not be viewed as a destination, but a starting point. They are not meant to provide a living, family wage, but as supplemental earning.
There should be no racial aspect to this issue, but sadly there is. Those who fall prey to it on both sides are wrong, and off the point.

I did it as a teenager to save money for a motorcycle. It kept me out of trouble. It was more like $125 an hour at the time.

no, and neither would anyone have to if wet back didn't do it.. the reason those wages are low is because wets will work for less, happens in any business. building business is being ruined by incompetent workers from mexico. we will all be paying when our houses start to collapse from their poor skills.......

I agree with 'whitefeather'. If there were no illegals here, then americans would be doing those jobs, but at a better wage!
