firstly getting him fixed might help...a little. then again...it might not. the fact is your dog has three very high active breed in him...esp the jack russel mix in him.

he NEEDS to be exhausted out from play. LONG LONG LONG walks will help this. he is barking because he is bored out of his mind. he's saying "I'M BORED! I NEED TO RUN, I NEED TO STIMULATE MY MIND, HELLO PEOPLE"
have you seen the movie Dr. Doolittle? remember that Jack Russel character....the one that was a ball freak..."throw the ball, throw the ball, pleassssssssse throw the ball!!!!!" yeah that's sort of your dog.

he needs something to do. fetch might be a good idea, or Frisbee. you could even try fly ball or an agility club.
obedience training is a good way to exercise him AND stimulate his mind, and get him thinking.
your dog sounds like he wants to be challenged, and will probably be the BEST dang dog at obedience. you might be surprised!

and as for someones suggestion that a mutt tends to bark more....I've never heard of anything that ridiculous. my PUREBRED dachshund puts my mutts to shame in the barking category!! gezzz some of the myths you hear about mutts makes me giggle.

castrate and neuter...are the same thing...its the removal of the testicles. ha ha....wow! and ive never seen a wolf establish domanace by smaking a fellow pack member with a newpaper! that is cruelty and dogs do not understand that except that it hurts!

my husband is a dog handler and runs german shepherds for a living, we had a troubled dog, max, with a similar problem, whatever you do DO NOT SHUT THE DOG IN A ROOM, this will only agrivate the situation, dogs aren't like kids they do not benefit from 'time out' the dog sounds like it has hyperactivity issues, how often do you walk it? and more importantly for how long?
i suggest a REALLY long walk first thing when your up like for an hour or even 2 if you can afford the time, this will wear the dog down for a while but you must reward your dog when it does react well, say a noise happens and it doesn't bark reward with a treat, (but not something that will wreck it's teeth), when you get back from your walk try giving the dog a big bone the best ones are fresh from your butchers (and most times they won't even charge you!) if you can't get any from the butchers ask your local pet shop for a 'postmans leg' this should all aid in your battle against the bark.
But remember be patient and you will get there, well done for caring so much for your dog.
Hope all goes well.

Don't take bits of advice here and there from the world and his wife, you need a proper treatment plan for this dog, designed by someone who knows what they are doing. Frankly, if you can't get your dog to stop barking, a shock collar is a waste of time since you won't know how to use it properly. I'm fed up of people recommending them just because some bloke off the telly uses one.
Take him to the vet, see about getting him neutered; it won't cure the problem but its the first step. No one thing is going to fix this.
Tell the vet the problem and see if they have a behavioural trainer attatched to the practice, most places do these days.
Get a proper treatment plan and work your way through it. There are a number of problems here and you have to tackle them one by one. He's overexciteable for a start. Plus it may be that he gets most attention when he's noisy; you need a trainer to show you how to react and handle him.
Try paying calm attention to him when he's settled and quiet, be quiet yourselves.

The sonic (sound) anti bark collar from Walmart works great! I have loaned mine so many times, that I don't know who has it right now..I only used it 10 years ago, when I got an older dog, who was a chronic barker..

.It only emits a sound, that gets louder with each bark after the first 2 'free' barks..Didn't stress my dog, and she still barks, but ONLY when appropriate. I took it off after 2 Weeks, and have never had to use it again..They are $30 at Walmart or on eBay.

use the same language when you want him to be quiet ("shut it" is probably apt!) and when he shuts up give him a treat. You should reward good behaviour rather than punish bad, because otherwise you spark resentment which makes it worse. Don't do the collar thing becasue dogs are made to bark sometimes and you shouldn't hurt him everythime he does it, it will scare him into never making a sound and thats not fair. best thing to do it to speak to a trainer and see what they suggest. we got a "dog whisperer" when ours was acting up which told us why he was behaving the way he was. it worked for us because we could understnd him better and act accordingly but i guess it depends whether you buy into that or not.

well, probobly you should get him fixed anyway. but yes, that would make him calm down quite a bit. instead of punishing him when hes bad, incourage him when hes good. if he barks, tell him NO! in a stern voice, (or spray him w/ water and say no, either way use a verbal command.) and AS SOON AS he stops barking, give him a treat. (not a toy) positive re-enforcement i think is the answer. i hope i can be of some help!
GOOD LUCK!

for one you don't castrate your animal.....you have him neutered.

NE way if he's a lab he's a pretty good size dog so this won't hurt but it will get your point to across to him. Smack his *** with a newspaper. What you must do is establish dominance so he'll listen too you.

Playing staring games with him, smack his *** with paper, and also putting your hand over his snout and little pushing down will help establish dominance. Ever watch the discover channel and a pack of wolves. Just watch how the alpha male establishing dominance (of course your not going to bite him or anything) but watch the other body language the animals give out and try to mimic them.

He has lots of nervous energy. Dogs need to walk, and not just in a circle. It's their nature to travel with a pack. You, or somebody, should walk the dog for at least an hour every day. He wouldn't have so much energy and he wouldn't be so nervous. This is how I stopped my rottweiler from going off every 5 minutes.

It might help to have him castrated anyway, as he is a breed mix which tends to bark and be boisterous. I think you should try dog-training classes; its not just the annoyance your dog causes you, but the nuisance to neighbours, especially those who work nights! Try classes, and see if it helps. Your vet will know where the good ones are. Good luck.
