You have to make sure he is tired so take him to the park or outside and run him around!!! Make sure you don't let him nap too late in the day or limit his afternoon nap for 1 hour tops!!!
Dont let him sleep in too long either!
This DOES work, Trust me!!!!

Is he taking long naps during the day? Establish a 2hrs maximum. Is he consuming alot of sugar (food/drink)? Just reduce the intake throughout the day. What is the amount of time he spends during physical activity compared to non-physical activity throughout the day? Make sure he physically active throughout the day will 'tire' him out in the evening.
Last, children need/want structure...
Is there an established bedtime routine to help him calm down gradually preparing him to sleep through the night? Set a hour like, 8pm as the bedtime. Begin bedtime preparations (bath, reading book, etc) a hour or 1/2 hour before...
It may be hard. It'll take time but be consistent. It'll be worth it.

Hope this helps.

My son use to dot he same thing . Even after falling asleep he would wake up as if it was a nap. Now sometimes I give him some melatonin. You can find it at any vitamin store. Its a natural non addicting type of medicine. Maybe after a couple times of getting him on a set pattern you can get him to sleep without it. Good luck and I hope you get some sleep soon.

put him in the bed at whatever time you desire and make him lay in bed with a night light, no tv. The first time you try he still wont go straight to sleep because of his usually sleep pattern of going to sleep at 2am, but it's just to get the ball rolling. Then in the morning get him up bright and early about 7am or 8am and then that night he should definitly go to bed early. just praticed this routine and you should be fine.

put him to bed. any kid that is allowed to stay up late will do it. if he goes to bed late, then in the morning wake him up at 8 am. dont put him down for any naps. at 7 give him his bath read him a story and put him in his bed. if he gets out put him right back. keep doing this. I have 3 kids ages 11, 9 and 3 i say its bed time and all 3 will go to thier own rooms and go to bed. if you break the cycle once and give in because he cries you have to start all over. just stick with it.

Well if you spoke some type of language to him that he could understand he might pick up the message you are trying to get across.
