It depends on whether or not you are buying a tv with a built in tuner or not. TVs that come without a digital tuner are much much cheaper.
If you want off air digital signals such as your local channels when they come in HD, you will need an antenna attached (either rabbit ears or bigger... see antennaweb.org for best advice there for your area) as well as the digital tuner in the tv itself. Not all cable companies will carry HD locals, so you want to check with them first to see what is best for you.
If your local cable company carries the local channels in HD, you do not need a digital tuner, but will have to get one of their boxes (I would check with the cable company just to make sure again).
With satellite, you would need a box but not a digital tuner because their boxes (DishNetwork Im 100% of), include a tuner and you can use this to see off air channels as well (but still need an antenna to see off air).
Lastly, as an FYI... remember that the majority of channels are not in HD as of yet. Local channels are mostly broadcast only at night (and you can check with your local channels to make sure they do so).
Check with whatever company you decide to go with to see what their offerings are in HD before you make a decision, and definitely shop around!

Well, It depends on what kind of HDTV you buy, and what content you would like to watch with it.

If your set is HDTV-Ready, then you still need to purchase a HDTV Reciever, to recieve High Definition Content.

If you want to watch HD Content, you'll need either an antenna to pick up HD Signals, or talk to your Satellite or Cable provider and ask for a HD Box.

According to my TV tech obsessed hubby, he says it depends. What are you hooking it up to? Are you talking sound system, etc? You could get an over the air HD antennae. Do you have a HD tuner built in or not?? He's already lost me....!!!!LOL
